The Power of One Accord 1/31/2010

“THE POWER OF ONE ACCORD”

In last weeks message… “The Power Of One Thing” we looked at 7 passages that brought a singular focus…

1…One thing desired
2…One thing lacking
3…One thing needful
4…Not One Thing failed
5…Do not forget this One Thing
6…One Thing I do
7…One thing known

2 weeks ago the word “looked” was a stronger form of the word for seeing (blepo) which means to look at, perceive, or sight.

But with the prefix…Apo which means “away from”.
So that apoblepo means “…to look away from everything else in order to look intently on one object.” ONE THING!

And last week we ended with… Heb 12:2 “…and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…”

So the last 2 weeks were about us individually in our walk with Christ…to look at One Thing…But this mornings message is about our lives collectively. selah
As the Body of Christ…We must be in ONE ACCORD.
And when we are…there’s POWER!
THE POWER OF ONE ACCORD.

Now…Being in "one accord" does not mean that every person will “agree” on every opinion or idea.
But, it does mean that every one is committed to loving God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.
The Greek word for “One Accord“ comes from 2 words:

"homo" meaning "the same" and…
"thumos" which means "passion."

When every person in a church has the same focus, the same passion, i.e…loving Jesus, then they are in "one accord."
Put another way…When everyone is looking unto Jesus, then we’re in One Accord.

Being in “one accord” is achieving the unity and maturity that Jesus prayed for just before His crucifixion:

John 17:21 Jesus prayed… “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

More in a moment, but notice the word “that” implies the effect or the result of being ONE.
“…that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (2x)

So what is the “Power of One Accord”?

The power of “one accord” is the supernatural works that God demonstrates through believers who are united. (2X)

This is done so that the world may be convinced that there is a living, loving God who wants to give eternal life to all who believe.

In the next 2 verse Jesus says… John 17:22-23 “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”

Just the fact that different people from completely different back grounds and every aspect of society can come together in unity and Worship God is a witness to the world that God is here!

We have different taste in music, different taste in style of clothes…We’re elderly, mid-life, young married, teens and kids

But we all love JESUS and we love an respect each other, that’s a GOD thing. And that is a witness to our world. Amen?

The Bible doesn’t say … “they’ll know we are Christians because we all believe everything the same!”…..NO!... It’s love. Faith, hope love
More specifically…it’s the supernatural Love of God.

Plus…Powerful, supernatural works of God happen when two or more believers who are in "one accord" cry out to God in prayer.

Jesus promised, Matthew 18:19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.”

There may be things we don’t agree on, but that’s one of the reasons we have a Vision statement ….
Our Vision is to see Christians committed to Praise and Worship, Fellowship, and being equipped to fulfill their ministry, so together we can present the Gospel to the Lost.

That is what we’re about.
Those who will be coming into membership need to understand, that’s our goal, that’s our aim…our purpose…
It’s a Vision of what we are and what we’re becoming in greater, and greater measure. Amen?

When Did “One Accord” Power happen in scripture?

God established His church on “one accord power”. He told His disciples to go to Jerusalem until they were endued with power.

Then, Acts 2:1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place….”

And it was then that the Holy Spirit came upon each one of them with power that caused 3,000 people to repent and be added to the Church that very day!

Sometime later they gathered again and,
Acts 4:24 says “… lifted up their voice to God with one accord...”

And V.30 tells us what they asked God to do… “…by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

One accord power is power to witness!
That’s why Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem…
Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

And sometime later after Pentecost, when persecution had begun, they get in one accord again and the place is shaken and… “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.”

The rest of chapter 4 shows how far they took this attitude of being in one accord…
V.32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.

There it is again… “Great Power…Great Grace”
See, when we’re in One Accord…God’s power will be demonstrated so that the world may know that He is here! (selah)

When we’re in One Accord…souls will be drawn to Jesus because of the Grace of God that is on us.

So…I think everyone would agree, that being in One Accord is absolutely vital for our church to be affective in reaching this community with the Gospel of Christ?! Amen!

But….What Destroys One Accord Power? (2X)

My answer may sound extreme or maybe over-stating the importance of being in one accord…but…the truth is…
It only takes one person to destroy the “one accord power” of an entire assembly! (selah)

We see this in the disastrous defeat of Israel at Ai in Joshua 7.

You remember, Israel had just miraculously won a battle in Jericho, because after the lessons of 40 years in the wilderness they were in "one accord."

Then one man, Achan, secretly stole certain items from Jericho. The power of God left Israel and they were beat by the little town of Ai…until that one man and his family were removed from the congregation.

Well, that’s Old Testament Rick…OK!
Similarly, one man and his wife secretly agreed to lie to the Apostles in regards to the price of a land sale. In doing this, they failed to realize they were not lying to the Apostles but to the Holy Spirit. God also removed them from the congregation by sudden death. Following this, great fear came upon all the church…

In 22 years of pastoring at Milan…I always loved it when God brought new people into our Fellowship…almost every week we had new people coming to our Fellowship and many stayed.

At times we were running between 150 to 200 people…
But I always hated it when people left….
but I learned that those who were with us couldn’t leave, and those who were not with us, couldn’t stay!

Listen, I learned that the spiritual life and vitality of the Milan Church came from being in one accord…UNITY.

Lets read some more from Acts and see the Power that God demonstrated through a church that’s in One Accord…

Acts 5:12-14 And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. (there were powerful signs and wonders that aren’t even recorded in the bible) read on…

“…And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch. Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women.”
Who wouldn’t dare join them?....the unbelievers!

I know in my knower…God is going to add to our Fellowship many people this year…but it is all connected to the Power of One Accord.

Based on this vital truth, it is clear that the church was not designed as a place to allow the unsaved to be a part. By doing so, the potential of "one accord" power is automatically broken!

That may sound too exclusive for some of you, but the church will not function in the Power of One Accord as a “support group” for lost people to gather together. (2X)

Obviously, If an unbeliever happens to visit, we are not to push them away, but to love them and tell them about Jesus.

But a lot of “Seeker Sensitive Churches”…though their motive may be good…eventually lose the Power of One Accord…and become a social club, instead of a Powerful Body of Christ where God can move and demonstrate His power.

And though they may have greater numbers of people…
The truth is…4 of a kind, beats a full house.

We are told in 1Cor what will happen to those who don’t know Christ when they come to a congregation that is in "one accord". Basically the Supernatural Power of God will expose their heart.

ICor 14:24,25 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

That’s the Power of the Holy Spirit!
I’m waiting and looking for the day that when lost people walk in this place, and we’re all in one accord. That they will run to the altar and say…“I know God is here, and I desperately need Him to save me from my sin!”

Listen, we never have to ask an unsaved person to leave so that we can be in one accord….years of experience has shown me that if we preach the Word of God…if we Worship Him in Spirit and Truth, they won’t stay around.
They’ll either get saved or leave.

1John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

Message… They left us, but they were never really with us. If they had been, they would have stuck it out with us, loyal to the end. In leaving, they showed their true colors, showed they never did belong.

See…it’s not us pushing them out…or making them feel unwelcome…or not meeting their needs. The choose!

The fact is, if the lost can come Sunday after Sunday and feel like they fit in…like many Main-line churches today, I guarantee you, the Bible is not being preached!

The lost will feel comfortable with a social gospel…
Words of encouragement and “lets just all get along” message.
But…they will be offended at the preaching of the Cross and repentance of sin and surrender of your life to Christ!

How about you? (salvation)

In closing…the exciting thing is, the power of One Accord operates in the realm of multiplication not addition.

Last week Haiti had an aftershock of 6.1 and that is powerful and sounds somewhat comparable to the original 7.0 devastating quake that destroyed the capital with over 100,000 dead.

But on the rector scale…7 is 22 times more powerful than 6.1.selah

Synergy…the effect of two or more forces that their combined will be greater than the sum of their individual effects.”

Example of synergy…1st place horse 5,000 lbs, 2nd 4,000…they hooked them together…9,000, NO…12,000

And the bible teaches that… 1 will put a thousand to flight and 2 will put 10,000 to flight…not 2,000.

Eph 4:2-4 “...with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, V.3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; ”

How do we keep the Unity or being in One Accord?
Amp. Living as becomes you with complete lowliness of mind (humility) and meekness (unselfishness, gentleness, mildness), with patience, bearing with one another and making allowances because you love one another. (bind us together lord)
